Design of forging blank structure and analysis of process elements
First, the design points of free forging blank structure:

The structure of free forging is restricted by its processing equipment and tools, and the design should take into account whether forging is convenient, economic and possible. Therefore, the structure of free forging should strive to be simple, symmetrical, and smooth shape composed of straight lines and planes or cylinders. (Specific points are illustrated in the third section)

Second, the structural elements of free forging:

(a) In order to simplify the shape of the forging and the forging process, some metal greater than the residual amount is added in some places of the free forging, and this part of the volume of the metal becomes the residual block. When designing residual blocks, you should pay attention to:

1, for short flange (flange) forgings, in order to prevent the deformation of the flange during forging, the residual block should be added in the axial direction to make the flange grow.

2, when the diameters of adjacent steps are not much different, the radial residual block can be added in the place with a smaller diameter.

3, when the small holes on the parts, narrow pits and complex shapes that are difficult to be formed by free forging, the shape of the forging blank can be simplified by adding residual blocks.

4, for the need for sample inspection and need to leave heat treatment or mechanical processing chuck forgings, should be added in the corresponding parts of the forging block.

Although the addition of residual blocks simplifies the forging process, the metal consumption and machining hours are also increased. This problem should be considered according to the production volume of forging and tool manufacturing.

(2) The design of steps and dips in order to enable the steps and dips on the free forging to be smoothly carried out during forging, the geometric parameters of their larger height and smaller length should be restricted.

(3) Flange design Free forging flange can be divided into two forms of end flange and middle flange. In forging design, the geometrical parameter of the small thickness or length of the flange that can be forged under the specified section size condition should be restricted. When the thickness or length of the flange of the forging blank does not meet the conditions, the margin in the direction of the thickness or length of the flange should be appropriately increased. For the end flange, the method of cutting the two forgings after forging can also be used.
